    Served during the Spanish American War - per Death Certificate.

    DEATH: Cause of death: Neck Fracture, Heat Prostration. Address at time of death: 134 Warren, Brooklyn, NY. He had been a resident of New York for 30 years.

    Notes:

    We assume William's birth surname is IRVING, not IRVINE. Newspaper notices and some records use both spellings of the surname. The 1881 and 1891 census list him as William IRVING. His only surviving son used IRVING as all descendants have. An 1865 City directory for Saint John, New Brunswick lists William Irvine on Sheriff Rd and William Irving on Main St. not sure which is our ancestor.

    Wiliam married twice. First to Jane (unknown surname) and had at least two children (Sarah and James). Jane and both chldren died in the 1860's and he then married Anna Seely who gave him three children.

    If born in 1808, William would have been about 60 years old when he married Anna Adelaide Seely in 1867 (his second wife). Anna would have been 27 years old. So she married a man twice her age. William's birth in 1808 is calculated from his age given in the 1881 census.

    Anna was the mother of all his surviving children. There is no record of the first marriage yet discovered. Both children of the first marriage did not marry and both died in their 30's.

    William and his children were Weslyan Methodist per 1881 census.

    Sometime after the death of her husband, William Irving, Anna and the youngest daughter Mabel, joined her son, Linus Dudley Irving, who had already moved to the Boston, MA area.

    Refer to Seely book pg. 369 which lists Anna's birth c1834. Alternate birth year is 1840, which is likely if her brother Seth was born in 1834.

    1881 Canadian census indicates Adelaide (Anna) was a Calvinist Baptist.

    Assume his middle name is Fremont, but might be Fields. His marriage record to his second wife gives his middle name as Fremont. One record gives has middle name as Fields. All other records found just give his name as John F. Hannam.

    BIRTH: Place of birth is in question. His marriage and death records show different places (Belfast, Waldo, ME and Eastport, Washington, ME, Nova Scotia, and Saint John New Brunswick).

    Beginning with birth records for the fourth child (Pauline) in 1892 the mother and John's wife appear as Mary Jane Hannam, not Jennie.

    Various documents record her name as Mary Jane, just Jane, or what we use: Jeannie as the most commonly used.

    Questionable - there is a 19 year old Jennie Bolton living with a Pierce family as a servant listed in the 1880 census for Cambridgeport, Middlesex, MA. This Jennie is listed as being born in New Brunswick to Irish parents. This is possible that Jennie resided as a servant after moving to the USA and before she married.

    Birth date for Thomas calculated from age given in death notice.

    Have 1880 Census (Hartford, CT) with a Thomas and Ann, but these cannot be the same people. Just an interesting mention; there might be Bolton descendants in the Hartford, CT area.

    We have a census for 1871 (St. John, New Brunswick) for a "William T. Bolton" which might be this Thomas (if the T is for Thomas). All records thus discovers give the father's name as Thomas, not William. It lists the whole family, but implies different birth order and dates for some of the children thus until we can confirm this is the right family we consider this census as suspect.
