    Samuel's Baptism was at First Church of Salem, MA

    The text from Savage's "Genealogical Dictionary of the Settlers of New England" states: SAMUEL, Salem, m. 14 May 1676, Sarah Stuard, had Samuel, b. 18 May 1677, d. in few mos.; John, 30 Nov. 1678; Samuel, again, 26 July 1680; Ann, 26 July 1683; Sarah, 9 Oct. 1685; Joseph, 14 Mar. 1687; Benjamin, 24 May 1689; and by w. Margery had Richard, 19 Dec. 1693; Mary, 8 Nov. 1695; Margaret, 3 Feb. 1697; Jonathan, 1699; Bartholomew, 23 Feb. 1702; and Margery, 4 Feb. 1706. All of Samuel's children were born at Salem.

    The Pierce "Foster Genealogy" book uses fractional suffixes to Individual Numbers for the last five children. It is believed because these last five children were discovered after other numbers were assigned. (Renumbering would be a major chore in the 1890's).

    Notes:

    Surname spellings: Stuart or Steward. It is believed that Sarah is the sister of Mary, Samuel Foster's sister-in-law, wife of John Jr.

    DEATH: Speculation on date of Sarah's death based on Samuel's son Richard was born to his second wife in 1693. The previous child Benjamin was born in 1689 to Sarah.

    Notes:

    QUESTIONABLE: The place of birth for John (other than somewhere in England) and who his parents were has not been discovered. Considerable research into John's origins has produced a number of theories, but no proof.

    John Foster is believed to have been in Roger Conant's company which coming from Nantasket (now Hull MA), settled and established Naumkeag, now Salem MA, in 1628.

    BIRTH: In an affidavit dated 1670, John states he is fifty-two years old and was born in England. This fixes his year of birth at 1618. If he was with Roger Conant in 1628, he would have been only 10 years old. Unlikely, but not impossible.

    Refer to F. C. Pierce's book Foster Genealogy for information on John Foster. Starting on page 694 that book includes records of Deeds and Wills.

    John was a farmer and may have also been a carpenter and/or stone mason. He deeded his land to John Foster Jr 1674. (From the book Boston and Eastern Massachusetts.)

    The text from Savage's "Genealogical Dictionary of the Settlers of New England" states: JOHN, Salem, had there bapt. Mary, 24 Mar. 1650 ; Samuel, 7 Mar. 1652; and John, 3 June 1655; and by w. Martha had Benjamin, b. 3 July 1658; Jonathan, 20 Dec. 1660, d. in few mos.; Jonathan, again, 22 Nov. 1662; d. young; David, 16 Oct. 1665; Elizabeth 22 Nov. 1667; and Ebenezer, 5 Aug. 1677; was freeman. 1682." From the statement "by w. Martha ..." one could infer that Martha is not the mother of the first three children implying John had an earlier wife; or it might just mean that the mother's name was not recorded in the earlier records (not unusual). There is ongoing dispute about the order of birth of John's children.

    John Sr. died as a result of a shooting accident while hunting. He was shot by Joseph Small.

    Notes:

    Some records list her first name as Mary, commonly spelled Marie in those days.

    We believe Martha is the Marie (age 14 years) named on the passenger list for the ship Truelove of 1635 along with her father (Ralph Tompkins), mother (Katherine Foster) and other siblings. Some researchers speculate that Martha is a daughter of Ralph Tompkin's second wife Hanna Aborne who he married in 1636, placing her birth in Salem after 1636; but Martha married John Foster in 1646/7 making her birth prior to 1630 much more probable.

    Not sure about her place of birth in England. In a deposition taken in 1670 Martha was about 43 years old; making her birth about 1627.

    After she became the widow of John Foster (1688), she married secondly Richard Adams. Richard conveyed land to Martha Foster on Nov. 16, 1688 stating " ... my intended wife".

    Source documents differ on year of marriage by about four years.

    Notes:

    Came to America on the ship Truelove with his first wife and children. He appeared to have settled first in Dorchester in 1636, then was in Salem in 1648.

    After he survived his second wife Ralph moved to Bridgewater to live out his remaining days in care of his son Samuel.

    On 27 Nov. 1666, administration of Ralph's estate was granted to John Tompkins who presented an inventory on 12 Nov. 1666. The Court ordered that the five acres of land mentioned in the inventory be given to the said John and after Ralph's debts were paid the remainder of the estate was to be given to Mary, daughter of John Foster (Ralph's granddaughter).

    DEATH: Unsure of date. Date assumed because husband, Ralph, remarried about 1636.

    BIRTH: Birth location is presumed to be where she married Ralph Tompkins. Also RALPH TOMPKINS married first KATHERINE FOSTER, daughter of PETER FOSTER and ELLEN, on 6 Nov 1608 in Wendover, Buckinghamshire, England. This suggests a marriage location and probably birth place, or region, as well as her parents' names.

    Notes:

    This was his first marriage.
    His daughter Martha on various records is listed as being mothered by either wife.
    Need to determine Katherine's date of death and Martha's date of birth to determine which is mother
