  After trying the National Guard, and the US Army he joined the US Navy March 12, 1918 and served in Newport, RI, Charleston, SC and onboard the U.S.S. Mount Vernon. Did his first acting while in the Navy at Newport, RI. Motion Picture and TV character actor. Best known for the TV series "The Rifleman" as Sheriff Michah Torrance but was a prolific performer and one of the John Wayne and John Ford gang.
