• Notes

  He wanted to go to sea like his father, but his mother forbade that life for her son. He graduated Bowdoin College in 1825 and followed literary pursuits. As a child he was a playmate of neighbor Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. The Preble and Lonfellow-Wadsworth families were fast friends for generations. See book Preble Generations; pg 181.
