  Entered US Navy as a midshipman in 1859. Was navigator on the US Steam Sloop Keasarge when it defeated the Alabama. Later as Lt. on Susquehanna at the capture of Fort Fisher and was Lt. Commander 1866-1870 in the Pacific squadron.
